TRIAL DATE SET IN HIV DRUGS LAWSUIT
The HIV drugs litigation has been consolidated into a JCCP. A JCCP (Judicial Council Coordination Proceeding) is a state level version of a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL). A jury trial has been set for January 20, 2022. The trial will be held in San Francisco County Superior Court and presided over by Judge Andrew Cheng.
The lawsuits allege that Gilead, the manufacturer of the medications, intentionally stalled the development of a safer version of TDF-based (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate) HIV drugs for over a decade in order to profit financially. Although the company had the opportunity to develop a safer drug formulation utilizing TAF (Tenofovir Alafenamide Fumarate) in the early 2000s, Gilead chose to maximize sales of its more dangerous HIV drugs during its exclusive patent window.
As a result, patients needlessly developed serious complications including
