After a line of Ikea dressers killed six children, Ikea issued a recall on over 29 million MALM chests that had been manufactured since 2002. The issue is the dresser’s strong proclivity toward tipping over. According to an article by the Associated Press, the chests that killed the children were not anchored or mounted on the wall. In response to

this, Ikea stated that all chests must be mounted to a wall, and they offered a full refund or a free wall installation kit. In an article published by Reuters, it was found that none of the furnishings that fell on the children had been anchored to a wall. In a New York Times article, Lars Petersson, the president and chief executive of Ikea USA, explained the safety of the MALM dressers if they are properly installed. Many consumers of this product felt they were unaware of the threat the unanchored furniture posed, and thus deemed Ikea’s reaction and response inadequate.
