According to the U.S. Product Safety Commission, four national retailers – Amazon.com, Buy Buy Baby, Diapers.com and Toys R Us/Babies R Us – have agreed to stop selling Nap Nanny baby recliners after the maker failed to take action in response to five infant deaths and dozens of reports of children injured by the recliners.
The recall affects more than 150,000 baby recliners, including Nap Nanny Generations One and Two, and the Chill model infant recliners, that were sold between 2009 and 2012. CPSC is warning parents and caregivers that these baby recliners contain defects in the design, warnings, and instructions which pose a substantial risk of injury and death to infants.
A 2010 recall involved the first generation of Nap Nanny recliners after the CPSC became aware of one death and 22 injury reports involving the seat’s harness. Since then, the agency was told of four more deaths, one involving the second-generation model.
The Pennsylvania-based manufacturer, Baby Matters LLC, told the Associated Press it has gone out of business, but denies that the product is unsafe. The retailers acted to recall the product since Baby Matters was unable or unwilling to participate, the CPSC said.
The CPSC advises consumers to review the return policy of the retailer from which they purchased a Nap Nanny recliner. If the product was bought at one of the retailers below, see the link or call for instructions on returns:
