During 2017 and 2018, the ridesharing company Uber received 5,981 reports nationwide of serious sexual assault allegedly inflicted by Uber drivers. These allegations ranged from groping to rape. When releasing the data, the company noted that these incidents represent a small fraction of rides compared to the total of 2.3 billion during those two years. However, women understand all too well that even one sexual assault can ruin a life.
Has Uber improved its safety issues since 2018?
Following the release of the report and in response to concerns raised about Uber’s safety issues, the company said that it had implemented ramped-up safety measures. These include subjecting each aspiring Uber driver to a safety screening that consists of a background check that looks for criminal history and driving violations. Furthermore, Uber drivers are subjected to a re-screening every year.
Uber has also been putting technology to work for passengers. A new feature called RideCheck evaluates whether a ride significantly detours from the expected route. In addition, an Uber app will automatically display the passenger’s location so that it is visible to the 911 dispatcher.
Safety tips for female passengers
There are several steps women can take to reduce the risk of using a rideshare service. Uber passengers can specify an exact pick-up location. Customize this location and then wait inside the building, watching out a window to check whether the car goes to the exact pick-up location. This allows you to check whether the driver has the correct information. Before approaching the vehicle, you should double-check its make, model, and license plate with the information provided in the app. If the car does not match the information, do not approach it.
Before getting in the car, ask the driver, “Who are you here to pick up?” Do not ask, “Are you here to pick up (your name)?” If the driver has your correct name, ask for the driver’s name and check that against the information provided in the app.
Next, always sit in the backseat—never in the front seat. You will want to have some distance between yourself and the driver. You can also share your trip information with a trusted friend or family member. Remember to text them after your ride to assure them you are safe.
Lastly, only use the app to message or call an Uber driver. This prevents the driver from accessing your number. Ultimately, it is also essential for women to trust their gut instincts. If something seems “off” or unusual, do not get in the car. Go back inside the building and request another ride.
