The FDA issued a warning on Tuesday April 5, 2016 that diabetes drugs containing Saxagliptin and Alogliptin may increase the risk of heart failure. The drugs containing these ingredients are:
- Onglyza
- Kombiglyze XR
- Nesina
- Kazano
- Oseni
The warning comes as a result of two large trials done involving patients with heart disease. Both trials found that more patients taking these drugs were hospitalized for heart failure than patients receiving a placebo. The risk is increased in those patients with heart or kidney disease.
Patients on these drugs should contact their doctor if they develop signs or symptoms of heart failure including:
- Unusual shortness of breath during daily activities.
- Difficulty breathing when lying down.
- Tiredness, weakness or fatigue.
- Weight gain with swelling of the ankles, feet, legs or stomach.
The FDA is adding new warnings to the drug labels regarding these safety concerns and asking physicians to consider discontinuing medications containing Saxagliptin and Alogliptin in patients who develop heart failure.
Patients should discuss any symptoms or side effects with their doctor before changing medications.
