There’s nothing wrong with working out and watching your diet to make yourself healthier, but attempting to speed up the process of weight loss or muscle building by taking over-the-counter dietary or herbal supplements may actually cause life-threatening liver injury.
It might surprise you to know that one of the primary reasons that medications are taken off the market is because they cause liver damage. Even acetaminophen products that remain on the market are required by the FDA to carry “liver warnings.” Now a new, limited study funded by the U.S. Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network has determined that supplements intended for body building and weight loss are the most likely dietary supplements likely to cause liver injury.
Researchers cautioned that the study’s findings weren’t conclusive, but urged medical researchers to conduct more comprehensive studies and suggested that regulations to protect consumers should be considered.
